Igor Vrebac

physical theatremaker

In his productions Igor Vrebac explores themes such as gender, sexuality and identity.

Born in Bosnia-Herzegovina and grown up in the Netherlands, Igor Vrebac (1986) graduated in 2012 with a degree in acting and directing at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Since then he has performed within theatre and dance companies such as DOX and Toneelgroep Oostpool and has worked with Norwegian director Øystein Johansen on four productions between 2012 and 2015.

To deepen his organic and physical way of acting, he started following international workshops in the Chubbuck acting technique. Elisabet Sevholt and Romy Wuyts have been his teachers in the Netherlands as well as in Sweden. Next to theatre, he was also seen in Dutch television series such as Noord/ZuidZwarte Tulp (S.2) and in short and feature films such as INERTIA and The Windmill Massacre.

Solo performances

Since storytelling through performing arts is his passion and goal Igor explored his own way of working in the theatre. Between 2012 and 2016 he produced and performed three solo performances: James’ Dream for Over het IJ Festival; Homo Sapiens, which won the jury prize for ‘Best Short Performance’ at the Spanish ACT Festival in 2015; and My Father Was A Terrorist which was a co-production between RIGHTABOUTNOW Inc. in Amsterdam and Contact Theatre in Manchester.

Directorial debut and own performances

In 2016 Igor took the step to only be a directing theatre maker. His directorial debut Macho Macho premiered in September of the same year and received the ‘Dioraphte Best of Amsterdam Fringe’ award. After a successful tour in the Netherlands, the performance was also seen in the U.K. and South Africa. In 2017 he made TRÆNS, a sexy ritual to expose the feminine and masculine. In 2018 he made HEROES, in which he took a closer look at the wonderful world of female bodybuilders. HEROES is the closing piece of a trilogy in which he explored his personal relationship to and perception of the male and female behavior. In addition to that he was nominated for the prize of best choreographer by De Nederlandse Dansdagen. In 2019 he did a research at het Atelier during Oerol on the sex appeal of mother Nature with his project Evolution Baby.

Residency of Igor Vrebac at De Nieuwe Oost

Within his long-term residency at production company De Nieuwe Oost in Arnhem he will develop his theatrical and choreographic working methods to become a more independent and international artist. Besides acting and theatre making Igor writes short film scenarios and gives workshops and coaching to performers of any kind.
